"The End Of Suburbia"
UNION (Feb 1): Vose Library together
with the Union Area Sustainability Group will present a showing of
"The End Of Suburbia" on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 1 p.m. at the library
located on the Common in Union. This film is the second in a series
of films focusing on issues of sustainability to
be shown at the library.
"The End of Suburbia: oil depletion and the collapse of the American
Dream" considers the oil-dependent existence of the suburban way of
life and whether this lifestyle can be maintained as critical oil
reserves are depleted. While the film considers the suburban
lifestyle - the so-called American Dream - the information presented
is equally significant to rural dwelling Maine residents. With
insight and humor the film seeks to examine the issues and offer
some resolutions.
This event is free. The snowdate for the event is Feb. 18.
Other films to be shown in this series will be "The Power of
Community" on March 11 (snowdate March 18) and "The Future of Food"
on April 15. All showings begin at 1 p.m. and are followed by the
opportunity for discussion.
For more information about the film, the film series, or the Union
Area Sustainability Group contact Vose Library at 785-4733.

need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’
performance. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to
sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human
and environmental health: sustainable site development, water
savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor
environmental quality.

Home".
We are delighted to have Al Heath
give our next sustainable living talk. He writes,
"I was a
carpenter, designer, and contractor for 12 years before changing
careers in 1990. Three years ago when I wanted to build my family a
new and much more energy efficient house, I found that not only was
it prohibitively expensive, but most of the builders I spoke with
didn't really know what "super-insulated, passive solar" meant. I
decided to re-educated myself to the new reality and techniques of
energy efficiency and build it myself. My wife and I researched, designed, and built 80% of our new home
while sub-contracting the rest. We now easily heat our beautiful
2000 square foot home on one cord of wood, 75 gallons of kerosene,
and all the free/clean sunshine we can get. I have recently
installed a solar hot water system that provides a majority of our
domestic hot water needs and next, we hope to increase the size of
the this system for space heating and further reduce our use of
firewood and oil.

6/2, Sat, 10:00am, Log Cabin, Maine Street, Yarmouth
Cool Cities Forum
Ami Robbins and
Ned Jones, Yarmouth High School Seniors, will host this forum to
motivate green-minded individuals and to pool ideas and thoughts
regarding the fight against global warming. We will tell our story,
ask for others to tell theirs, then discuss what individuals/groups
can do to further their efforts within their respective towns, or
even on the personal level. This event is geared mainly towards high
school students, with a special focus on current juniors, as we are
looking for some motivated kids to continue our work next year
across the county. However, adults are also encouraged to attend
(adults will be the minority of attendees). We will discuss the Cool
Cities program, the work of the Yarmouth Students for Climate
Protection, and many other things.
We are hoping for a group of 20-30 people, with two or three
representatives from each town. However, this is only a guideline.
We can accommodate as many as 100+, so anybody who is interested in
this issue is welcomed to come.
This forum will be a perfect place to start a movement in your town.
We will give you the tools (e.g. a step-by-step process that has
been proven to work!), you only need to provide the people. The only
things that we are asking people to bring are lunch/money, and the
motivation to take action against climate change.
This is our way of spreading what we have learned to others who will
continue this essential work. Please invite anybody who is
interested in attending, either as an activist or a supporter.
Spread the word!
Please RSVP by Friday, the 25th to help us plan for the event. I
will send out a reminder a couple of days before that. FMI Ami
