02-04-07 'Detective' takes diving to the top
BRUNSWICK - John Chatterton routinely risks his life to explore some of the world's most famous shipwrecks, including the Titanic, the Lusitania, the Britannic and the Andrea Doria. These exploits have earned him a spot as co-host in 57 episodes of "Deep Sea Detectives," a popular television program on the History Channel.
But Chatterton, a 55-year-old Harpswell resident, is most proud of the dives he and his partner made to a German U-boat that sank deep in the ocean off New Jersey during World War II.

8/3/05 [E] - Maintaining Maine A Rural Community Debates its Future (By Selina Rifkin)
Harpswell, Maine is a small fishing community in the mid-coast region. One half of the town is a narrow neck of land, jutting into Casco Bay, and the other, a string of three islands connected by bridges. As the town library puts it, “On the west is a single peninsula, Harpswell Neck, a thin finger of granite, pine and rolling meadows dotted with classic 19th century homes, a scattering of working farms, white churches of architectural perfection and the no-nonsense front yards of the Neck’s scores of working lobstermen.” The townspeople are friendly, and most were born and grew up there. The town seems to consist of a couple of long, scenic roads, a few houses and some breathtaking views.

1/13/05 New England's Best Coastal Sea Duck Hunts
Public-access sea duck hotspots in Maine are far too numerous to cover - any water you can reach by boat is fair game. But one place that is frequently recommended by waterfowl biologists is the Casco Bay region, which offers some of best sea duck opportunities in southern Maine. This area offers easy access to water, plentiful birds and good local accommodations for duck hunters. Harpswell Sound, which empties into Casco Bay, is one of many good bets here.

In fifth place was Maine's flirtation with liquefied natural gas. After months of emotional debate, Harpswell voters in March rejected a proposed $350 million LNG terminal, one of several projects being considered in New England and Atlantic Canada. Five months later, Passamaquoddy Indians gave the green light for the tribe to work with an Oklahoma development partnership to bring LNG into tribal land on Passamaquoddy Bay.

HARPSWELL — Marolyn Bibber would seem a likely supporter of the proposed tax cap on Tuesday's ballot. A lobster dealer who owns a waterfront home and wharf, Bibber has a $7,500 property tax bill that will surely leap upward next year when the town completes its revaluation. But Bibber plans to vote "no" on Question 1.

8/29/04 Tax cap promises uneven impact
The communities that have low tax rates are property-rich places, like Mount Desert, Harpswell and Kennebunkport, or very rural places that offer few services or have other income, like Garfield Plantation.
The communities with the state's highest tax rates are "service centers" - a category that includes cities like Augusta and Portland, but also towns like Ashland. Although Ashland's population is less than 1,500, the town is a hub community for a 2,850-square-mile region.

6/27/04 Maine Historical Endangered Properties Listed For 2004
Also on the list of endangered historic properties this year is Halfway Rock Lighthouse in Harpswell, built in 1869. The 76-foot granite block lighthouse off the tip of Bailey Island was once considered one of the most difficult posts for lighthouse keepers due to its treacherous location, which was often inaccessible during the winter or during bad storms. The tower has fallen into serious disrepair and since the safest way to take supplies to the ledge is by helicopter, it increases the cost. Donations may be sent to Tim Harrison, president of the American Lighthouse Foundation, P.O. Box 889, Wells, ME 04090, Tel. (207) 646-0245.
