From the site: "Two
of the most controversial matters will no doubt be mining and oil
drilling. Although President Clinton's executive order forbids new mine
claims and oil leases, it allows existing ones. Even so, in the face of
increased operating restrictions, Dutch-based Andalex Resources gave up on
plans for a massive coal mine four months after the monument's
designation. Conoco Oil, on the other hand, had geosurvey markers on the
ground within three weeks, and is drilling some 14,000 feet into a plateau
where oil has not been found previously. In response to this new pressure,
The Wilderness Society has already placed Grand Staircase-Escalante
National Monument on its list of 10 Most Endangered Wildlands."

Scientists challenge study used to
promote LNG safety
Since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists attacks, an obscure scientific study
by a little-known Oklahoma consulting company has been widely used by
federal officials to ease concern in U.S. communities about the dangers of
liquefied natural gas.
But the study's mild assessment of LNG fire dangers is generating a
growing controversy in the scientific community, and even the study's
author acknowledged in an interview last week that it is being misused by
federal officials.

Effect on Fishing and environment
Over 300 People Attend El Paso Meeting by Shelly Hipson
The impact of a sub-sea pipeline on the lobster
industry and a compensation plan for fishermen were discussed by El
Paso. Company officials suggested that it would take more than a year
for the sea bed in the area to re-establish following construction. El
Paso is gathering information on how the physical barrier of a pipeline
and its vibration may affect lobster behavior. Chris Cottreau, a local
fisherman, questioned how they were planning to study the behavior of
such an elusive creature, when fisherman and government scientists have
been trying to determine lobster behavior for years.
Front
The Halletts fear that noise and vibrations from
the pipeline and gas pipeline as it makes landfall near Shelburne will
chase lobsters away from traditional fishing areas and also prevent
reproduction of the valuable crustaceans.
The fishermen have banded together with a determined group of
environmentalists who say the gas project will rip apart the rural
landscape and leave residents breathing air laced with byproducts of gas
processing.
Jocelyn Hagaman, a psychologist who moved to the Shelburne area from the
United States several years ago, accuses El Paso of ignoring the
concerns of people who came to the area to enjoy clean air.
